Department of Psychiatric Nursing
Overview

The faculty of Department of Psychiatric Nursing believes that, advanced Psychiatric Nursing practice builds on the knowledge and competencies of a Psychiatric Nursing education. Psychiatric Nursing education focuses on the theory, practice, research and management. The Learners of Psychiatric Nursing refine critical thinking and diagnostic-reasoning skills, as well as leadership, management and teaching abilities. Further, the faculty believes that health care is a multi-disciplinary effort. The faculty prepares Psychiatric nurses for advanced Psychiatric Nursing practice with interdisciplinary collaboration. This is accomplished through the contribution of expert advanced Psychiatric Nursing knowledge and practice, as well as interpersonal relations and communication skills. The faculty believes the needs of health care consumers require access to psychiatric nurses having sound theoretical knowledge and clinical excellence. This access is particularly important to those in locations which have been underserved by the psychiatric nursing care. The Psychiatric Nursing curriculum fosters the development of advanced practice psychiatric nurses who can effectively meet diverse health care needs in various settings.

Aim
The aim of psychiatric nursing education is to prepare the postgraduates to assume responsibilities in nursing service as nurse educators, specialists, consultants, researchers and administrators in a wide variety of professional settings.

Objectives

1. Utilize/apply the concepts, theories and principles of Psychiatric Nursing science
2. Demonstrate advance competence in practice of Psychiatric Nursing
3. Practice as a nurse specialist in Psychiatric Nursing.
4. Demonstrate leadership qualities and function effectively as nurse educator and manager.
5. Demonstrate skill in conducting nursing research, interpreting and utilizing the findings from health related research.
6. Demonstrate the ability to plan and effect change in Psychiatric Nursing practice and in the health care delivery system.
7. Establish collaborative relationship with members of other disciplines
8. Demonstrate interest in continued learning for personal and professional advancement.
