Practicum
The practicum consists of concurrent field work for three days or 15 hours per week. The students are placed in welfare agencies or in communities and work under the guidance of a field instructor, to help people cope with their problems and to participate in programmes of development and change.

The broad aim of the practicum is to provide a variety of experience to learners to:

develop professional values and attitudes.
develop ability to observe and analyse social realities,
develop understanding of the social systems and their dynamics.
develop skills of working with people in personal, group, community problems and change.

The practicum of II semester will include a rural camp, while the practicum of the IV semester will include a study tour and a period of block practicum of four weeks duration to be done at the end of the course. Each practicum paper has 100 marks 20 for internal assessment and 80 for vive voce.

Placement for Practicum

The School lays emphasis on the process of social case work, social group work and community work in the practicum. Accordingly each student is provided with the opportunities of learning these methods in the course of the two years through placement in suitable agencies. Normally a student is placed in one agency during the first year and in another agency during the second year.

Absence from Practicum

If due to illness or some emergency, attendance at field practicum is not possible, the student should immediately notify the faculty and agency supervisors either by phone or letter sent by hand delivery, the reason for absence. If an absence is anticipated, then prior permission should be obtained from the field instructor and agency instructor.
Practicum - Evaluation
At the end of each term the student’s performance in the practicum will be evaluated during an evaluation conference after the student has written a self-evaluation on his/her performance in the field.

The purpose of the evaluation is to help the student to see areas of strength and weakness in his/her performance. It gives him/ her a clear idea of where he/she is in his/her professional development and what areas still need to be worked upon in the next semester.

Evaluation is a shared process in which both the student and the field instructor expresses their views on the former’s growth according to the criteria developed by the school. The field instructor will acquaint the student with the standards of performance expected at each semester. The student’s performance will be evaluated in the following area.
  • Development of professional attitudes and values and identification with the social work profession.
  • Adjustment to the agency setting, identification with agency, knowledge of its aims, objectives, programmes and regulations, relations with the staff and fellow students and general conduct in the agency.
  • Development of skills in helping people, case work, group work and community organization, ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practice.
  • Use of community resources and collateral contacts, degree of resource, fullness, initiative, ability to interpret needs of clients and group members to others from whom help is sought.
  • Ability to maintain records, regularity, punctuality, neatness and orderliness, ability to record the process as well as analysis and evaluation of work done.
  • Use of field instruction, capacity to accept instruction as a learning process, motivation for learning as revealed in prior submission of record, punctuality and regularity in attending conference, capacity to follow through with directions given in conference, ability to think creatively of solutions independently of the instructor and freedom in discussing them during conference.

Evaluation is really an ongoing process, beginning from the time student start working and the instructor starts teaching, every field work conference carries it a step further. In fact, at the evaluation conferences, there will be more or less summing up of the discussions held during earlier fieldwork conferences.
