Dr. M.V. Shetty - In Memoriam 
| Late Dr.M.V.Shetty, MS,FRCS, FRFPS (1917-1976) was an eminent Surgeon and Professor of Surgery at Mangalore and was popularly known as a sincere doctor to his patients, a respected colleague to his fellow doctors and an excellent professor to his students. He had strength of conviction and lived up to his humane beliefs in practice. Outside his clinical practice, he did social work in building up the Home Guards and promoting awareness of remedial treatment for physical disabilities. He brought about a revolution in Mangalore, in the early sixties, by making the disabled feel equal to normal people. He was a lover of music and was an exponent in Tabla playing. He believed in the disciplined training of young people, be it in vocational or professional courses of study and always dealt with youngsters in a humorous and understanding manner. He was a person to whom people turned to for solutions and they were never disappointed. For his noble work he was awarded with Presidents Gold Medal at the 28th Republic Day Celebration at New Delhi.
In memory of Dr. M.V. Shetty a Trust was founded in the year 1985, by Dr. M. Ramgopal Shetty an eminent Vascular Surgeon of Mangalore. When the declaration of the Trust was registered as Dr. M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust (R), the clear aim of the trust was to open, conduct and sustain educational and vocational institutions of high quality and calibre.
Dr. M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust is managed by the Founder, Dr. M.R. Shetty who is the Secretary and Executive officer of the Trust and supported by the Trustees. Dr. M.R. Shetty has been closely associated with academic bodies of Mangalore University and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences since their inception. He served as a member of both the Aacdemic Council and Syndicate of Mangalore University for several terms, and on the Syndicate of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, the Medical University. He has made a name for his pioneering contribution to the setting up of allied health courses, under private management and the vocationalising of degree courses especially in the medical sphere of Univesity education. He also served as a member of the executive body of the Rehabilitation Council of India.
The goals of the Trust in keeping with the need of the times, have been the promotion of progressive, high quality, globally relevant education. Having successfully managed several colleges in the last two decades the Trust has as its most recent initiative ventured to develop a new complex of educational institutions in Thodar Village near Moodbidri, with diversified programmes. The Dr. M.V. Shetty Institute of Technology (MVSIT) denotes, the active participation of the Trust in the project of developing in India as a knowledge based society in the Post Industrial Information age. By locating the college in a semi-rural area the college is in step with the greater national endeavour to provide greater opportunities and amenities in rural areas.
Dr. M.R. Shetty showed foresight in the courses he established in the policy of introducing vocational courses beginning in 1987 with Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing) the trust took the initiative to start degree programmes in Physiotherapy (B.P.T.) in 1989, Speech and Hearing (BASLP) in 1991, Radiology (B.Sc.) in 1995, Medical Lab Technology (B.Sc. MLT) in 1996 and M.Sc. in Hospital Management in 1993. Some of these courses were later inducted into the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Under the umbrella of Dr. M.V. Shetty Institute of Professional Sciences and Management, the trust instituted a Bachelor of Hotel Management course in 1988 and two additions to the Nursing stream came in the shape of a B.Sc. Nursing Post Certificate course (B.Sc. PC) in the year 1990 and a diploma course in General Nursing in the year 1995. Alternative directions were taken with the commissioning of Leelavathi Shetty College of Education. With its B.Ed. Programme and the Sarsa College of Arts and Science with it B.A. (with Classical Musical and Dace options) and its P.G. Diploma in Bharathanatyam. This is in keeping with trust policy of bringing vocational courses into the main stream of higher education and would also help employability and self-employment in the sphere of humanties.
The driving need to take these degree programmes to higher academic, clinical and research levels dictated the inauguration of post graduate programmes in M.Sc. Nursing during the year 1992, M.Sc. in Hospital Management in 1993, a Masters degree programme; Physiotherapy (MPT) in the year 2001, Speech and Hearing (MASLP) in 1995 and Master in Medical Lab Technology (M.Sc. MLT) in 2009. A Master of Social Work (MSW) was instituted in 1999. The Ph.D Programme in Speech and Hearing has given an impetus to research studies under the banner of the Trust. The clinical postings, outreach campus and collaborative ventures like the Trust and Government run Blood Bank and Medical Lab in Govt. Wenlock and Lady Goschen Hospitals have helped build a socially constructive culture within the Trust Institutions.
The Trust has many first to its credit; the first Nursing College under private management, the first Physiotherapy College in Karnataka State, the second Speech and Hearing College and the first to have had a Ph.D. programme in Nursing and Speech and Hearing in the State under Private Management. The allied health courses have been pace setters in the academic scene in Karnataka State.
The Trust derives its strength and vision from Dr. Shetty's strong commitment to broadening the base vocationalization of education and injection of professionalism into higher educational institutions.
